As we have walked into the year 2023, or the year of Reiwa 5 in the Japanese calendar, I wish to express my heartfelt congratulations to all of you on the beginning of the new year. We are truly grateful for the enthusiastic support and cooperation generously extended by the members of Japan Career Development Association (JCDA) during the last three years despite being heavily impacted by the COVID-19 Pandemic throughout. We look forward to your continued support in this year as well.
It is with deep regret that I inform you of the passing of Dr. JoAnn Harris Bowlsbey on April 2022 (in Japan time). Please allow me to call Dr. Bowlsbey “JoAnn” in this article, which is how we always called her. JoAnn died peacefully at the age of 89 at a hospital.
For us, JoAnn will always be the mother of Career Development Advisor (CDA) certification and of career counseling in Japan.
The National Career Development Association (NCDA) is facing many changes during a period of larger national and global shifts. The world of work has become incredibly complex. Technological and social forces are changing how work is performed, who does it, and even what work looks like.
The idea for APCDA began in 2009 when Soonhoon Ahn, a Korean-American visited National Taiwan Normal University. They agreed that Asian countries needed to share information about career development among each other. Soonhoon decided to pursue this goal via NCDA (the National Career Development Association for the USA) because many internationals attend the NCDA Conference each year. At NCDA in 2010, several of us met with Dr. Tatsuno of JCDA and discussed where to incorporate APCDA.
As we have walked into the year 2022, or the year of Reiwa 4 in the Japanese calendar, I wish to express my heartfelt congratulations to all of you on the beginning of the new year. We are truly grateful for the enthusiastic support and cooperation generously extended by the members of JCDA during the last year and the year before that despite the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
I am Seth Hayden, the president of the National Career Development Association in the United States. Given the long history of cooperation between JCDA and NCDA, it is a privilege to share thoughts on the importance of professional involvement. Let me begin by congratulating the Japan Career Development Association on the recent celebration of its 20th anniversary.
