The Japan Career Development Association (JCDA) is dedicated to enhancing career counseling quality, fostering career autonomy, and creating social impact through the expertise of CDAs. In FY2024, guided by the slogan “Establishing Career Counseling as Sustainable Social Infrastructure”, we expanded activities that connect individual growth with societal well-being.

This year marks eight full years since I became the president of JCDA. Upon my appointment, I advocated the slogan "Impact Beyond." As we begin a new year, I would like to reflect on the consequences this slogan has had—not only on myself but also on JCDA and its members.

The 2023 NCDA Conference took place in Chicago, Illinois from June 29th – July 1st. This year’s theme was Career Development Around the World: Making Connections and Increasing Access to Impact the Global Labor Market and the focus was on the influence career development has globally in a post-pandemic world.

As we have walked into the year 2023, or the year of Reiwa 5 in the Japanese calendar, I wish to express my heartfelt congratulations to all of you on the beginning of the new year. We are truly grateful for the enthusiastic support and cooperation generously extended by the members of Japan Career Development Association (JCDA) during the last three years despite being heavily impacted by the COVID-19 Pandemic throughout. We look forward to your continued support in this year as well.

It is with deep regret that I inform you of the passing of Dr. JoAnn Harris Bowlsbey on April 2022 (in Japan time). Please allow me to call Dr. Bowlsbey “JoAnn” in this article, which is how we always called her. JoAnn died peacefully at the age of 89 at a hospital.
For us, JoAnn will always be the mother of Career Development Advisor (CDA) certification and of career counseling in Japan.
